Nextel Motorola i335 firmware update R7F.00.05

Get from here: http://servicemyphone.motorola.com/iden/support/software/html/firmware_utility.html#

Over a year ago, I posted when Motorola released the R7F.00.04. I've posted the new read me littered with changes from R7F.00.04. We don't have a more robust changelog from Moto, but this will at least tell us what areas have and have not changed.

From the read me
- Update i335 software to version R7F.00.05 from R7F.00.04
- Update codeplug to version 6A.04.01 (no change)
- Update flashstrap to version FS7Fv00.26 from FS7fv00.24
- Update CSD to version CXX.06.15 based on the service provider from CXX.06.14
- Update font pack to version 7F.00.07.00 (no change)
- Update French/Spanish/Portuguese/Arabic/Hebrew language pack to version 7F.00.30.02 (no change)
- Update carrier pack to version 7F.00.09.00 (no change)
- Update theme pack to version 7F.00.08.00 (no change) but Sprint, So Linc, Asia Generic, Brazil, Telus, MIRS, KTP Korea, Peru, PTC Saudi, Mexico to 7F.00.08.01 and Boost to 7F.00.08.04
- If the user chooses to update phone with default java applications, restores the default java applications (the user must manually delete any previous java applications).

As always, I just like bigger numbers on my versions

Sprint has lost its love for QCHAT

IDEN has been an on and off again relationship with Sprint. Even Dan Hesse (CEO) admitted that Nextel was a mistake.

To bridge the IDEN/CDMA PTT gap, Sprint has tried a few things:
1) PowerSource - Additional IDEN radio in phone for PTT
2) QCHAT - PTT data link to IDEN over CDMA

Sprint has now announced that #2 is no longer an option. Which means that my dream of a PTT CDMA WinMo Phone on Sprint is dismal unless they feel like dropping in an IDEN radio in the device. That would be an interesting HTC phone.....

Even the IDEN Blackberry is not too inviting. 3G is so plentiful on other devices. Why would I want to take a business/multimedia device like that on a network that is in the data stone age?

I personally think they're trying to distance themselves from the network as much as possible for a sell off. But this is pure speculation. Being constantly disappointed, I figure this would be the next logical move. Who would pick Nextel up anyway?

Microsoft probably IS NOT cracking down on WM6.5 Roms

EDIT: The original takedowns were actually posted on this thread. I can't believe anyone took the email address Internet1@microsoft-antipiracy.com seriously.

Main Forums on XDA for Kaiser
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378

A few problemed threads in forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428261
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436503

MS has forced requested XDA-developers to remove links to ROMs that feature WM 6.5's new features. They don't seem to mind if ROM chefs are using the new bases. MS seems to be focuses on the new features like HoneyComb, the lock screen, and new Today screen.

In theory, when XDA hackers gave us WM6.1 ROMs, we knew it was in the works for our providers to offer us the update. But with Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft has already announced that they will not allow device software upgrades to WM6.5.

It looks like Microsoft has contacted XDA-Developers admin and chefs to get all the links removed. I hope something positive can come out of this, but I honestly doubt it. I was looking forward to the new lock screen!

Side note: I'll be up for purchasing a new Windows Mobile phone soon. Microsoft will be sporting their WM6.5 soon to the consumers. They need to tell me if they'll allow an upgrade path to WM7.

Nextel Motorola i335 firmware update R7F.00.04

Just got some new Nextel firmware for my Nextel i335

From the read me
Upgrade i335 software to version R7F.00.04
- Upgrade codeplug to version 6A.04.01
- Upgrade flashstrap to version FS7fv00.24
- Upgrade CSD to version CXX.06.14 based on the service provider.
- Upgrade font pack to version 7F.00.07.00
- Upgrade French/Spanish/Portuguese/Arabic/Hebrew language pack to version 7F.00.30.02
- Upgrade carrier pack to version 7F.00.09.00
- Upgrade theme pack to version 7F.00.08.00 but Sprint, So Linc, Asia Generic, Brazil, Telus, MIRS, KTP Korea, Peru, PTC Saudi, Mexico to 7F.00.08.01 and Boost to 7F.00.08.04
- If the user chooses to upgrade phone with default java applications, restores the default java applications (the user must manually delete any previous java applications).

Naturally, I haven't noticed any difference after the upgrade, but I like higher numbers.

I did attempt to do the depot install to not install the default java apps, but they're still there. Maybe they're from the previous install. I just wanted them gone without having to manually "deinstall"ing them

edit: added moto link to firmware

Nextel Text Messaging is Severely Broken

I rely on my Nextel for emergency pages from our Police Dispatch Center. Their system pages out to Nextel phones only, but that's a different story.  For the past week and a half, I've been missing text messages. And I am not the one.

Luckily, our department has been semi-aware and we've been calling each other to relay the messages.  After each emergency call, I reboot my phone and all of a sudden the messages come flowing through.  I did a bit of some testing, and I get about 25% of text messages immediately.  The other 75% if have to reboot my phone to receive.

Nextel Customer Care confirmed this problem. They've had nationwide problems with delayed/missed text messages. Their official recommendation is to reboot the phone.

There is a good side to this though: the Nextel Customer Care center I got @ 11PM on a Saturday was in Washington, USA. The lady I talked to was extremely knowledgeable and very understanding.  That was enough to calm me down and make me think they were devoting their resources to correcting the problem!  I don't have a text messaging plan since I do not get enough emergency pages per month to make it worth my while to buy a text messaging plan. So I thanked the lady and asked if I could get reimbursed for all the test text messages I sent to myself.  Got this email a few minutes later

Sprint - You disappoint me at times

I had never been a Sprint customer, and had no plans until I needed a Nextel.  I was actually very impressed on how well it performed, and how useful it was.  Then, they surprised everyone by releasing QCHAT on their CDMA Rev A network which interoperates with Nextel. This was something they should've done the day they purchased Nextel.  Having two incompatbile networks just was a bad move and was why they bled customers.

So now that they have the late capability with some new handsets. About 4 phones I believe have this new QCHAT ability.  I've searched high and low to see if they're going to have QCHAT on their future Windows mobile devices like the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro.

I got official word from Sprint:

Question: Will future Windows Mobile phones support QCHAT PTT over CDMA?

Dear Peter Fattore,

Thank you for contacting Sprint Customer Service.  I will be happy to assist you in the device inquiries.

I do apologize, but we do not have any devices coming out with those qualifications.

If you have any questions or need further assistance please feel free to respond to this e-mail.

Thank you again for contacting Sprint Customer Service.  We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Ashley M.

Customer Service Specialist

Sprint

This brings a frown to my face. They have the only PTT network that people commonly know about. They need to have every freaking phone support their PTT and/or license it to other networks. It's rediculous that they don't have a common national PTT network.

Sorry for the rant, but I've tried to hope that Sprint would solidify their PTT network, but time will tell.

Now I am 'pretty' sure about this part. QCHAT uses Java, therefore it could work on a Windows Mobile phone

I briefly tried bridging the USB Network connection from the phone and the ethernet port to see if the phone would hand off more than 1 IP, but no luck yet. There may have been another problem. I'll work on this more when it's warm.

Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta 1 Released!!

Seriously, it's not a leak! They actually released it.

They fixed some major bugs that were killing me. For example, if you didn't use the on-screen keyboard, but used the an on-board keyboard, they text box would lose focus in a few places.

Go download it. Go fight of some apple fanboys. :-D  (I just pissed off half of my friends) ((and no jokes about me having 2 friends or something))

Edit: OMFG, it destroys your notification settings. I understand it's beta, but I seriously got screwed a few times. I get all of my emergency call outs via sms......  I can no longer in good conscience recommend this. Looking forward to future releases.

Edit2: Problem has been corrected, doesn't destroy notifications.

Long nerdy projects actually coming to an end. Ha! Proved you wrong!

Those who know me know I have a severely high level of nerdiness that probably borders on some form of a disorder.  My two largest projects recently involved my Vehicle and my Media Center PC.  A very detailed write-up on each project will be posted in the future.

Each project involved a very large amount of time, but wasn't too horrible on the budget at the same time.  This was pretty important since I was in college for most of it!

1. My 1996 ford explorer: On-Board x86 Computer Windows XP SP3, runs StreetDeck mobile software, GPS, touchscreen embedded in dashboard with custom bezel, MTX sound system, plenty of emergency lighting (not gaudy), and a 2-way VHF radio for ham/government

2. Media Center: Hauppauge HVR-1800 Cable Tuner with Digital OTA, 2 GB RAM, HD-DVD drive, Blu-Ray drive, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre, and VMC Netflix.

Opera Mobile 9.5

Opera Mobile 9.5 has been something many have been looking forward to for a long time!! It generates full websites and does NOT need the mobile version that many sites provide.  Some betas popped up on XDA recently 1409 build.  It performs EXTREMELY well for a beta on my Kaiser (AT&T Tilt) running WM 6.1.  I highly recommend it to anyone using Windows Mobile!

Set this browser to be your default via the registry.  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:DEFBROWSER.  I just changed :MSPIE to "/windows/operal.exe".  You should be able to go back to MSIE, but why would you?  I found that reg key from the 1409 link. Thanks ycavan

Edit: Modified pic to show actual screenshot of application. Pic taken with Remote Zoom-in

Edit2: Also like to bleed my memory and not release it, just FYI

Edit3: 1409 build added. much more stable, rapes ram less. Also added regi option for def browser. Why wasn't this in the app?

Amazon's Kindle

I've seen lots of blogs talking about the Kindle, but I've never seen one in person.  It actually didn't look that awkward or out of place.

Screw Starbucks or other hipster hangouts, KFC/A&W FTW.

Edit: Thanks for pointing it out, Chris!
